About the Piper Arrow
The Piper Arrow (PA-28R) is a four-seat retractable-gear single, built on the Cherokee airframe with a constant-speed propeller. It is a popular first complex airplane and a common choice for commercial pilot training. The Arrow II, built from 1972, has a 200-horsepower Lycoming fuel-injected engine and a slightly longer cabin than the first Arrows.
Many Arrows had an automatic gear extension system; some owners have since had it locked out under an approved modification, so it is worth knowing which configuration a particular aircraft has.
What to Check When Buying a Used Piper Arrow
- Landing gear system, including the automatic extension system and its configuration.
- Applicability and compliance of the Piper wing spar inspection directive, which depends on the aircraft service history.
- Engine hours since overhaul and propeller condition.
- Corrosion, especially in older airframes.
- Training use in the past, which means more landings and gear cycles.
